Good morning Harry,
noted correctly: that Caeles is a beast ! (my wife calls it "the oil rig").
A very stable turntable which makes it possible to play vinyl troublefree although our house is next to the railline.
I did make some alterations to this Caeles: lowered centre of gravity, oil dampening and a secondary axle. All alterations got Stephan's seal of approval !
The numbers next to the Caeles-picture:
1 = Caeles
2 = external drive/motor
3 = battery power supply fro drive/motor
4 = vacuum pump for platter (sucking the vinyl to the Caeles)
5 = pneumatic stuff needed for air bearing and pneumatic isolation/levelling of the Caeles
Of course this is my primary source. From here it runs via a Silvercore Phono 1 to a DIY tube preamp (picture included). Tubes used are 4 volt repeater triodes like the Philips PT8, 4019A, 101F, 3A/107A, etc. Plenty to choose from.
The other tube you'll see is the 8086 / EL5070 which is needed for the Mu-stage.
This preamp started with very old stepped attenuators from Rohde & Schwarz measuring gear. Nice sounding and very precise but i could hear clicking noise which i didn't like. So currently i use a more modern 63-step double mono stepped attenuator from Weinschel (which runs linear from DC to 2GHz).
The used triodes are only 4V/0,25A at the filament so no serious glow to be expected. In fact you can hardly see that these are running. Sorry....
Happy listening

Hello Reinout,
I thought I have seen in another blog that you have used a Supravox 285GMF in a open baffle? Is this correct?
If so what are your experiences in zjat field?
Best regards
Peter
Good evening Peter,
correct !
My big speakersystem is simply too heavy to move to audio-demonstrations/events (100+ kg excl all power supplies). But i simply need an acceptable demonstration-speaker so i made me a sensitive and well sounding lighter version of my big system:
- the same woodwork
- the same system (open baffle + K-tube)
- woofer/mid is your mentioned Supravox 285GMF
- tweeter was a FaitalPro HF10AK but now exchanged by a von Langa A4000
I can run these passive or active which makes it flexible; exactly the point of a demonstration.
I used these for instance at the ETF (then with the FaitalPro tweeter). Nice combo of drivers both punching way above their weight class ! This combo gives you a 100 dB speaker but can handle almost 70 Watt as well; ideal for other people to play with their poweramps.
Included a picture of the ETF where someone used his DIY GM100 amps on them: a proper picture for this thread "rohrengluhen".
That Supravox-driver is a beauty; fully recommend this ! I will change my standard (but very good) 285GMF to a field coil version (285EXC) if i have the opportunity to find those somewhat cheaper then the current official price. They are worth that money but i use this system only a couple of weeks a year.....
Regards, Reinout
Thank you for the information.
Best regards
Peter
