  • Hello,

The French people at l'Audiophile already did discover in the eighties that turntable performance depend a lot upon the quality of the motor AND its power supply.

There have been several ideas how to do it perfectly and you have to find the right combination.

I still have my Sota Sapphire i bought in the eighties.

I got some Scheu parts that you can see in my other thread.

My '' teller '' is more than 12 kilo and it is also larger diameter than usual.

In the VPI forum i read about people changing the VPI motor into the motor '' package '' made by Sota. Actually they bought the idea from an Americain retired engineer who published his ideas on diy audio.com.

One thing i like about this motor is that it starts at slow speed so your belt will live much longer. In the beginning the motor will get a higher voltage to get more energy to start the platter running. Once it is at correct speed it will lower the voltage. The idea is that if the platter is turning at the right speed the motor wont need much power anymore. When i switch off the power supply the platter will run a little while before stopping. The motor will make less noise with lower power.

I think nowadays you will also need a better supply because the use of many SMPS in your house. Especially the very cheap ones like telephone charger will send noises into all your hifi equipment . Some power supplies in your equipment can filter some noise, maybe one or two can filter a little more BUT better not have the noise coming in through your 230 volt cable.

In the attachment you can see a filter on the cable that runs between the power supply and the BLDC motor ( from Sota) used on a VPI turntable. I saw this on VPI forum i did not try myself. The only thing i did is reducing the length of the cable. Why use 180 cm if 30 cm is long enough?

    Greetings, Eduard
